This year the Student Conference theme is “Survival.” On
May 1, 2004 Linda S. Jevahirian, Founder and President, Legal Search & Management,
Inc. will present “Surviving the Job Search” Oakland
Community College, Orchard Ridge Campus.
Finding a job is a process like anything else. It requires focus
and discipline, as well as being in the right place at the right
time. New paralegals that know how to employ specific job finding
techniques will be the most successful. The key is locating entry-level
positions, and this is no easy task.
The strategy is not as simple as writing a resume and answering
a bunch of want ads. In fact, most professional positions are filled
through word of mouth and never even hit the papers. You’ve
heard this before – and its true. Being at the right place
at the right time. It’s not always what you know but who you
know.
Networking is probably the most important tool. Believe it or not
the people with the most information are employed paralegals. Students
need to understand the value of keeping in touch with these influencers.
Attending association meetings and getting involved is one of the
best ways to accomplish this task.
If it seems like there is nowhere to go, don’t give up. There
is a constant need for good legal assistants. A good education and
a good fight will land that first position. And guess what? Job searching
skills are the same at all levels. The second time around it is a
whole lot easier.
